<address>"L" Signal Company, <lb/>Royal Engineers, <lb/>A..P.O.S., 7</address> <date>21st July. 1916.</date> <salute>Sir Edward,</salute> <p>I take the liberty of writing to you to ask if you could <lb/>kindly give protection to my wife and children against the <lb/>vindictiveness of a certain Mrs, Cotterill living in Leinster <lb/>Avenue, North Strand, a Englishwomen whom my wife has befriended <lb/>in many ways. I might point out that my wife and three children are <lb/>living alone at No.5. Leinster Street, North Strand and have no <lb/>relations or friends whatever. Mrs. Cotterill, I presume, has <lb/>written an anonymous letter to the authorities making baseless <lb/>accusations against her character and I enclose a copy of a letter <lb/>received from my wife where it will be seen how far matter were <lb/>carried.</p> <p>My duties here are abnormal and such worry as this is <lb/>likely to seriously interfere with my capability of executing them. <lb/>On leaving the Chief Secretary's Telegraph Office to mobilise in <lb/>August 1914 Sir James Dougherty promised to assist me in any way <lb/>should the occasion arise and I now beg that assistance may be given <lb/>to my wife to live peaceably as an honest and law abiding <sic>women</sic> <lb/>and immune from such cowardly attacks.</p> <salute><sic>Iremain</sic>, Sir, <lb/>Yours Faithfully,</salute> <signed>L.T.Silvester <lb/>Sgt. R.E</signed> <address>The Right Hon: <lb/>Sir Edward O'Farrell <lb/>Chief Secretary's Office, <lb/>DUBLIN CASTLE. <lb/>DUBLIN.</address>
