this. The doubts could not beat me so vigorously
 <lb/>as they do. I am <hi rend="underline">not</hi> on a rock but 
<lb/>on a bed of thorns. I will not say more to 
<lb/>you in a letter, you must continue to help me as 
<lb/>you have done in the way you wrote of and 
<lb/>in the way you say so many more are doing.

I return you the Fr. Provincial's letter and
<lb/>that of Fr. Gorman - with very many thanks
 <lb/>for sending them to me to read.

I <hi rend="underline">guessed</hi> that Fr. Gorman had been prohibited 
<lb/>from again visiting me at the Tower - at this time.
<lb/>I was sure he would come in if he could - and when 
<lb/>he did not come next day I knew quite well why.

I am glad indeed to hear the news from 
<lb/>Putumayo of the fathers there - the Franciscans 
<lb/>were loved in Peru from of old, and it is a 
<lb/>good thing to think of them there now in that 
<lb/>dreary region - and I am glad for <hi rend="underline">their</hi> sake.
 <lb/>Once I grieved at it - and thought I was sending 
<lb/>or asking for them to be sent out to bitter trial 
<lb/>and disappointment - but it is not so - and
 <lb/>they will see the fruit of their privations and of 
<lb/>their self-sacrifice in the lives they save, and 
<lb/>in the increase of life and happiness around them
 <lb/>to replace the old dread and fear and mortal
 <lb/>misery.

I am writing to Sydney tonight too - 
<lb/>I fear some of the books he so kindly sent me to
 <lb/>Brixton have been lost there - one I know has - 
<lb/>your three books - Aubrey de Vere + St. Augustine 
<lb/>I have here with me - I hope they may be returned 
<lb/>to you later on - I cannot ensure it - for I
